Help — How to use this tool

Four steps

How to use the Title Tag & Meta Description Preview

  1. 1

    Paste your title

Use the title tag from the page, not the headline on the page, if they differ.

  2. 2

    Add the address and description

The address shows as a breadcrumb; the description is your two-line pitch.

  3. 3

    Watch the meters

Red means Google will probably trim the text. Phones trim descriptions sooner than desktops.

  4. 4

    Rewrite the front

Put the service and city first and the reason to click in the first sentence, so trimming costs you nothing important.

ReadMe.txt

The reason why

Why your title tag is the most-read sentence on your site

More people read your search listing than will ever read your home page. The title is the blue link; the description is the pitch underneath. Together they decide whether a searcher picks you or the result below.

Google trims long titles by width, not by a fixed character count, which is why a title full of wide capital letters gets cut sooner. Put the words that win the click first: the service, the city, and one reason to choose you. Leave the brand name for the end, where trimming costs less.

Questions about the Title Tag & Meta Description Preview

Plain answers about what the tool does, what it doesn't, and what to do next.

How long should an SEO title tag be?
Short enough to fit in about 600 pixels, which usually means 50 to 60 characters. Google cuts by width, not by count, so wide letters run out sooner. Put the service and city first, so the part that matters survives if Google does trim it.
How long should a meta description be?
Roughly 120 to 155 characters, with the main point in the first 120 so it survives on phones. Google sometimes ignores the description and writes its own from your page text, so make the page clear as well. Treat the description as a small ad: one benefit, one reason, one next step.
Why did Google change my title in search results?
Google rewrites titles it judges too long, stuffed with keywords, or out of step with the page. A title that matches the page's main heading and says plainly what the page offers makes a rewrite less likely, though not impossible. Check the result in a search and adjust if Google keeps overruling you.
Do title tags still matter for local SEO in San Antonio?
Yes. The title is one of the clearest signals of what a page is about, and it is the first thing a searcher reads. A page titled "Roof Repair in San Antonio" has a fair shot at that search. A page titled "Home" does not. It is one of the cheapest fixes in SEO.
Does this SEO title preview tool save what I type?
No. The preview runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored, and it is gone when you close the tab. If you would like a person to review titles across your whole site, ask for a free plan instead and we will send a written list.
